Anointing of the sick
The priest or bishop often anoints the sick person's forehead and palms with the sign of the cross.
The cross symbolizes man’s evil and God’s mercy.

The oil used in administering the sacrament of Anointing of the Sick is called Oil of the Sick. It is one of the three Holy oils blessed by the bishop of the diocese

hands are often associated with human activity. When sick people are anointed on the hands, they are reminded that they must turn all their activity over to Christ.

When a Catholic is very sick the Church anoints the person with oil. Traditionally referred to as Extreme Unction or Last Rites the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is administered both to the dying and to those who are gravely ill or are about to undergo a serious operation, for the recovery of their health and for spiritual strength. It is a ritual of healing appropriate not only for physical but also for mental and spiul sickness.
